Gazing at a woman with your eyelids lowered makes you look like a more appealing candidate for a short-term fling, says a study published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.

Researchers had over 230 subjects look at a series of images—a guy with closed eyelids, a guy with lowered eyelids, and a guy with raised eyelids. The results: Men who had raised eyelids were considered more trusting and better suited for long-term relationships. Lowered lids were associated with short-term sexual relationships and risky behaviors, says Daniel Kruger, Ph.D., study author and evolutionary psychologist at the University of Michigan. But having a staring contest with some hot chick across the room may not be the best way to reel her in. Instead, check out these three things than can make you instantly more approachable.

In a study from Anthrozoos, subjects even said that people with dogs appeared more approachable, relaxed looking, and happier when compared to people standing with flowers. As for what to say when she’s within ears reach, keep it witty. Women are most attracted to men who use dry, sarcastic humor, and least attracted to guys with a dark or vulgar sense of humor, according to a survey from eHarmony.
